Neon green and deep violet-blue…
Not exactly the kind of palette I would usually choose.
I tend to gravitate toward softer, more natural harmonies — muted greens, warm neutrals, dusty tones inspired by plants, light, and quiet landscapes.
Colors that feel calm. Balanced. Familiar.
But this time, I wanted to do the opposite.
An Unexpected Choice
I picked neon green almost instinctively. It felt loud. Almost uncomfortable.
And I paired it with a deep violet-blue to counterbalance that intensity.
At first, I expected them to clash.
They didn’t.
The neon green instantly catches the eye. It demands attention.
It vibrates on the page.
The deep violet-blue, on the other hand, feels grounding. Dense. Stable.
It creates a visual anchor that holds everything together.
Contrast & Balance
Instead of fighting each other, they enhance one another.
The contrast creates depth. The tension creates movement.
The illustration suddenly feels more alive — more dynamic, more intentional.
What started as a small experiment became a shift in how I see color.
Sometimes, the combinations we avoid are the ones that teach us the most.
Stepping Outside
We often stay within our aesthetic comfort zone because it feels safe.
Because it’s consistent. Because it reflects what we already know about ourselves.
But stepping outside of that zone — even slightly — can open unexpected doors.
I wonder how many beautiful combinations I’ve missed just by staying comfortable.
A New Perspective
This experience reminded me that color isn’t just about harmony.
It’s about energy. Dialogue. Contrast.
And sometimes, the most striking results come from the least expected choices.
Maybe next time I reach for a soft palette, I’ll also consider the bold one sitting quietly on the side…
just in case it has something new to show me.
